چکیده
OBJECTIVE To identify fibromyalgia syndrome in patients with sleep disordered breathing. METHOD We studied 50 patients seeking treatment at a sleep disorder clinic for snoring, apnea and excessive daytime sleepiness. Sleep disordered breathing was diagnosed through the use of polysomnography. To diagnose fibromyalgia syndrome, patients were evaluated in accordance with the criteria established by the American College of Rheumatology. RESULTS Of the 50 patients, 32 were male. The mean (+/- standard deviation) age of the group was 50 +/- 12 years. The mean body mass index was 29.7 +/- 5.6 kg/m(2). The mean apnea-hypopnea index was 36 +/- 29 attacks of apnea or hypopnea per hour of sleep. Of the 18 women and 32 men evaluated, 9 and 2, respectively, met the American College of Rheumatology criteria for fibromyalgia syndrome. CONCLUSION Considering the fact that the prevalence of fibromyalgia syndrome in the general population is 0.5% for men and 3.4% for women, the more than ten-fold higher proportion of fibromyalgia cases seen in this sample supports the hypothesis that there is an association between sleep disordered breathing and fibromyalgia syndrome.

Fibromyalgia and sleep-disordered breathing: the missing link – author's response
Fibromyalgia pathophysiology is a labyrinth where " our understanding has grown from counting tender points to an evolving concept of subgroups and a countless variety of dysfunctional biochemical and metabolic interactions " [1]. Sleep disorders have been reported in fibromyalgia patients [2], including daytime somnolence and tiredness, and non-restorative and fragmented sleep with higher occu...

Recently, Martinez-Lavin [1] proposed a model of sympathetically maintained neuropathic pain syndrome that has the merit of scrutinizing possible mechanisms behind the central sensitization model [2]. Eisinger [3], in an editorial comment, raises the issue of heterogeneity permeating Martinez-Lavin's proposition. Since it is difficult to establish a traumatic trigger event in all cases, Eisinge...

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this work was to determine whether, in children with metabolic syndrome and sleep-disordered breathing, metabolic markers separate them from children with metabolic syndrome without sleep-disordered breathing and whether treatment of sleep-disordered breathing with continuous positive airway pressure is associated with an improvement in metabolic derangement. PATIENTS...
متن کاملChronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia in diagnosed sleep disorders: a further test of the ‘unitary’ hypothesis
BACKGROUND Since chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia (FM) often co-exist, some believe they reflect the same process, somatization. Against that hypothesis are data suggesting FM but not CFS was common in patients with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). The presence of discrete case definitions for CFS and FM allowed us to explore rates of CFS alone, CFS with FM, and FM alone in SDB ...

Objectives—To examine sleep disordered breathing including obstructive sleep apnoea in patients with idiopathic adult hydrocephalus syndrome (IAHS) and to study the eVects of CSF drainage and shunting procedure on sleep disordered breathing. Methods—In 17 patients with IAHS polysomnographic investigations were performed before and after lumbar CSF drainage and after shunt operation. Results—Bas...
